Expanding capacity and efficiency on the Great Western Mainline

Between 2016 and 2019, major platform extension works were carried out across eleven stations along the Great Western Mainline, Thames Valley branch, and Oxford branch lines. Stations including Twyford, Pangbourne, Thatcham, Tilehurst, Goring & Streatley, Cholsey, and Didcot Parkway underwent significant upgrades to accommodate the introduction of longer, modern trains, improving passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Hercules Site Services played a crucial role in delivering these enhancements. The project required extensive platform re-gauging, new surfacing, and drainage solutions, including soakaways and Under Track Crossings. Additional responsibilities encompassed repositioning trackside equipment, OLE isolations, seamless transitions between old and new platforms, as well as installing ducting, lighting, and CCTV to enhance station infrastructure.

As a trusted Framework labour supplier to Hochtief, Hercules provided highly skilled, PTS-qualified workers throughout the entire project. Their workforce spanned multiple trades, including electricians, steel fixers, carpenters, gangers, multi-skilled operatives, plant operators, traffic marshals, and groundworkers. The ability to source and supply such a diverse set of professionals ensured that each aspect of the work was executed to the highest standard.

Maintaining operational stations while executing large-scale works was paramount. To achieve this, Hercules’ dedicated Rail Operations and Resource Teams worked in close collaboration with site teams to implement strategic 24-hour working periods. Leveraging their extensive rail expertise and robust Fatigue Management System, they ensured compliance with stringent PTS fatigue requirements. This dedication to efficiency and safety was consistently validated by achieving 100% in RISQS audits.

The ability to rapidly meet labour demands, even at short notice, was a key factor in keeping the project on schedule. Hercules’ responsiveness ensured that client needs were met with precision and reliability, reinforcing their reputation as a dependable labour supplier.

The impact of this project extended beyond infrastructure improvements. Several stations, including Didcot, Twyford, Pangbourne, Tilehurst, and Aldermaston, were recognised for excellence, earning Network Rail’s prestigious Good Practice awards. These accolades highlight the commitment to quality and innovation that defined the project’s success.
