Hercules Construction Academy driving the future of UK infrastructure

The UK construction industry faces a critical skills shortage, but one academy in Nuneaton is making a significant impact. In just 12 months, the Hercules Construction Academy has trained over 1,100 individuals, equipping them with the skills needed to support the nation’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Housed in the former Gibbs Technologies site on Avenue Road, the academy has rapidly become a powerhouse for training future construction professionals. Its first year of operation has been a resounding success, with thousands more expected to benefit from its courses in the coming years. Major infrastructure initiatives such as HS2, AMP8 water sector projects, Highways England developments, and the proposed Lower Thames Crossing are all poised to gain from the academy’s growing talent pool.

The academy provides a range of qualifications, from health and safety training to NVQs and plant machinery certifications. Specialist courses in utility detection, working at height, overhead powerline awareness, and highways training further enhance employability. A key focus has also been collaboration with local authorities, enabling unemployed individuals to re-enter the workforce. This strategic ‘talent pipeline’ has already seen many graduates join Hercules Site Services, contributing to vital construction and infrastructure projects.

Brusk Korkmaz, CEO of Hercules Site Services, reflects on a transformative first year: “2024 was a landmark year for the Hercules Construction Academy. Training over 1,100 individuals and helping many back into work is a tremendous achievement. The UK construction and infrastructure sectors are facing a shortage of 225,000 skilled workers, and we are tackling this challenge head-on through an innovative and proactive approach to labour supply services.”

He continues, “I’m also incredibly proud to welcome the next generation of learners into our academy and highlight the vast career opportunities within the construction sector. Our students benefit from industry-seasoned lecturers who provide real-world expertise, ensuring they are well-prepared for employment or returning to their roles with enhanced skill sets.”

Hercules Construction Academy is not just filling a skills gap; it is shaping the future of the UK’s infrastructure workforce with hands-on training, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to sustainable careers in construction.
