The imminent threat of climate change necessitates immediate action to avoid negative consequences, particularly by reducing fossil fuel use in energy, industry, and transportation. Climate scientists agree that reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is crucial. Sea shipping, responsible for about 3% of global emissions (over 700 million metric tons of CO2 annually), is a key area for improvement. Maritime authorities are implementing green shipping solutions, which encompass sustainable practices, technologies, and strategies beyond just decarbonization. These efforts aim to mitigate the environmental impact of shipping on both the atmosphere and marine ecosystems.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been active in this regard, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 and the Paris Agreement. Since 2011, IMO has introduced measures to improve ships’ energy efficiency and reduce emissions, with a revised 2023 strategy targeting net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. This strategy includes the adoption of alternative fuels and the reduction of carbon intensity, with mid-term measures expected by 2025 and implementation by 2027. The IMO also supports developing countries in these efforts, focusing on alternative fuels, safety, and global cooperation.
Green shipping can be achieved through various methods. Eco-friendly vessel design using advanced materials and streamlined features can enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Sustainable propulsion systems, such as electric and hybrid engines, offer cleaner alternatives to traditional fossil fuels. Renewable energy-based fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, and hydrogen reduce pollutants and GHG emissions. Optimized operations, including energy-saving measures and digital technologies, improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), waste heat recovery systems, ballast water treatment systems, and emission reporting and monitoring systems further contribute to environmental sustainability.
Quadrise plc (LON:QED) is an energy technology provider whose solutions enable production of cheaper, cleaner, simpler and safer alternatives to fuel oil and biofuels, proven in real world applications. Quadrise technologies produce transition fuels called MSAR® and bioMSAR™, which allow clients in the shipping, utilities and industrial sectors to reduce carbon emissions whilst also saving costs.
