Quadrise: The Future of Clean Shipping

Quadrise is rewriting the playbook for clean fuels with a powerful blend of innovation and commercial momentum. Its breakthrough emulsion fuels are gaining real traction among global shipping giants, unlocking emissions cuts, cost savings and rapid scalability—all with existing infrastructure.

Quadrise’s 2024 Sustainability Report paints a compelling picture of a company on the verge of a breakthrough. Its patented emulsion fuel technology, MSAR® and bioMSAR™, is gaining significant interest across the maritime and energy sectors thanks to its unmatched combination of lower emissions, cost-efficiency and infrastructure compatibility. With operational trials underway with MSC Shipmanagement and Cargill, and active projects across Europe, North America, Southeast Asia and Morocco, Quadrise is well-positioned to lead the marine sector’s transition to cleaner fuel.

At its core, Quadrise offers immediate, low-capex solutions for hard-to-abate sectors. MSAR® provides up to 9% CO₂ reduction with improved engine efficiency, while bioMSAR™, which incorporates renewable glycerine and other sustainable feedstocks, delivers GHG cuts of over 25%—and potentially over 50% with future blends. These fuels are compatible with existing ship engines and bunkering infrastructure, enabling rapid and affordable adoption.

The company’s flagship project with MSC, the world’s largest container ship operator, is a powerful validation of its commercial readiness. Fuel production is already being prepared at the MAC² terminal in Antwerp using Quadrise’s modular Multifuel Manufacturing Unit (MMU), with Cargill supplying the renewable glycerine. This trial not only marks a milestone for full-scale marine deployment but positions Quadrise to service additional clients from the same hub.

In parallel, bioMSAR™ is progressing through an accelerated innovation pipeline. From lab tests to engine trials with Wärtsilä, and now sea trials, the pathway to commercialisation is well defined. The company’s net-zero fuel goal, bioMSAR™ Zero, using 100% renewable bio-components, is ahead of schedule. Testing of advanced biofuels, including lignocellulosic sugars, pyrolysis oils and B100 methyl esters, has delivered exceptional engine performance, lower NOx and CO₂ emissions, and a step-change in clean fuel viability.

Globally, Quadrise is building supply and demand ecosystems across key shipping and industrial regions. In the US, its partnership with Valkor is targeting the production of ultra-low sulphur MSAR® directly from heavy oil with minimal refining. In Morocco, the company has moved from successful trials to a 30-day paid demonstration with industrial giant OCP, with commercial fuel supply discussions already in motion. Additional expansion plans include Panama and Southeast Asia, where Quadrise’s fuels are being primed for large-scale adoption via power plants and refinery-linked infrastructure.

Beyond the environmental and cost advantages, Quadrise fuels improve safety and storage logistics. Their water-based emulsion composition ensures complete combustion with minimal soot and easier handling, reducing risks for ship crews and mitigating the impact of potential spills.

Governance, inclusivity and sustainability are embedded in Quadrise’s strategy. The company voluntarily adopts the UK Corporate Governance Code, has introduced a Gender Equality Policy, and is aligning its roadmap with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Its carbon reporting shows a year-on-year reduction in emissions per employee and its R&D activity continues to attract bio-component partners drawn to Quadrise’s unmatched emulsification expertise.

With regulatory pressure mounting—especially from the EU’s FuelEU Maritime rules—shipping and power operators urgently need viable transitional fuels. Quadrise delivers precisely that: scalable, proven, and commercially attractive alternatives that cut emissions without forcing asset overhauls.

Quadrise plc (LON:QED) is an energy technology provider whose solutions enable production of cheaper, cleaner, simpler and safer alternatives to fuel oil and biofuels, proven in real world applications. Quadrise technologies produce transition fuels called MSAR® and bioMSAR™, which allow clients in the shipping, utilities and industrial sectors to reduce carbon emissions whilst also saving costs.
