Morocco embraces MSAR fuel for cleaner and more efficient energy

Morocco is making strides in its commitment to greener energy with the introduction of MSAR, a cutting-edge fuel known for its cleaner and more efficient combustion. This innovation promises to reduce pollutant emissions and lower fuel costs, marking a significant step forward in the country’s environmental and economic strategy.

The Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) is dedicated to its green transformation strategy, as evidenced by a new commercial framework agreement with Quadrise, a supplier of innovative energy solutions. This agreement includes the supply of MSAR to OCP and a collaborative paid commercial trial at OCP’s Jorf Lasfar site.

MSAR, or “Multi-phase Superfine Atomized Residue,” is an advanced fuel developed by Quadrise. It is an emulsion of heavy fuel oil and water, stabilised by chemical additives. This composition offers several benefits over traditional fuel oil, including cleaner combustion, reduced emissions, and lower fuel costs.

The agreement between OCP and Quadrise spans one year, with the possibility of extension. It covers three main aspects:

  1. Supplier Search
Quadrise will identify suppliers, such as refineries, terminal operators, and traders, capable of producing MSAR to meet OCP’s demands. To facilitate this, OCP has signed a Letter of Intent to enter into a Commercial Supply Agreement with a supplier licensed by Quadrise to supply MSAR.
  2. Feasibility Study Update
Quadrise will update the technical, economic, and feasibility study for converting the Jorf Lasfar site to MSAR consumption. This follows a successful materials transfer and cooperation agreement in June 2022, where MSAR and bioMSAR (a biodegradable variant) tests were completed successfully in November 2023.
  3. Combustion Test
A manufacturing unit will be set up to emulsify locally available heavy fuel oil using MSAR technology. A 30-day combustion test will then be conducted on a furnace at the site. The successful conclusion of this test is a prerequisite for finalising a Commercial Supply Agreement.

Jason Miles, CEO of Quadrise, commented on the importance of this agreement, stating, “This agreement marks a very important milestone for Quadrise. We are delighted to progress towards the commercialization of our technology with OCP, a world leader in its sector. This agreement provides a clear path to long-term commercial revenues and an opportunity to create a supply point for our fuels in the Mediterranean, a strategic location for maritime bunkering.”

He added, “We look forward to progressing commercial supply discussions with potential suppliers and working with the OCP team to finalise the commercial trial. Based on the success of the previous trial, we have every confidence in its positive conclusion.”

The collaboration between OCP and Quadrise represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Morocco. By adopting MSAR, OCP not only enhances its green credentials but also positions itself at the forefront of innovative energy solutions, paving the way for broader adoption of this technology in the Mediterranean region and beyond.
