Since September 2022, Quadrise has been engaged in a joint development agreement with biofuel specialists Vertoro BV to integrate Vertoro’s biofuels into Quadrise’s multi-phase superfine atomised residue (MSAR) and bioMSAR emulsion technology and fuels. MSAR, an enhanced emulsified synthetic heavy fuel oil, is set to be trialled on board the MSC Leandra by the end of the first quarter of 2024.
Following the successful production and testing of stable blends of bioMSAR containing up to 40% of Vertoro’s crude sugar oil (CSO) at pilot scale, the partnership is extending the scope of the agreement. This extension includes the development of bioMSAR Zero, incorporating CSO for testing at sea. The testing will be conducted on a newly designed prototype motor yacht built for Vertoro by the Dutch firm Focus Motor Yachts. This yacht’s fuel system and engines will be specially designed to run on fuels produced using bioMSAR Zero technology, which combines CSO and other biofuels.
As part of the agreement, a land-based testing programme will be conducted to investigate the performance of both premixed and blend-on-board bioMSAR Zero solutions before proceeding to sea trials on the yacht.
Jason Miles, Quadrise’s chief executive, commented on extending the agreement with Vertoro, emphasising the importance of progressing efforts towards longer-term zero-emissions solutions while continuing to focus on moving current projects towards revenue. Michael Boot, Vertoro’s co-chief executive, expressed excitement about extending the collaboration to meet the needs of an environmentally conscious yachting community. He highlighted that the innovative Focus Motor Yacht will serve as a living laboratory and validation unit, accelerating access to lower-cost marine biofuels for luxury yachts and showcasing solutions for the commercial shipping and yachting industry.
